While The Beatles do not spell out the cause of her death, loneliness certainly seems to have played a part. The lyrics tell us she "picks up the rice in a church where a wedding has been"... in fact, the church seems to be the one place where she finds any human contact, since the lyrics also say she spends her days hoping someone will visit her: she "waits at the window, wearing a face that she keeps in a jar by the door"-- a metaphoric way of saying she wants to be prepared to look natural and spontaneous if a visitor ever arrives... but no-one does. Eleanor is one of the "lonely people" who have no-one to care about them; when she "died in the church, and was buried along with her name," nobody even came to her funeral.
