How did English come to Philippines?

English came to the Philippines in force in 1898 with the arrival of the Americans, who had been ceded the territory after Spain's loss in the Spanish-American War. English gradually replaced Spanish as the language of administration and education, although Spanish is still important, if not spoken by a large number of native speakers (but then, neither is English). The decline of Spanish and the rise of English was marked after the end of World War II, especially as a lingua franca understood by many Filipinos.
