The most succinct answer is that she fell into it. As most know, Madonna began her career as a dancer, but soon became frustrated with it. She has remarked that she soon realized she would never become a true 'star' by doing modern dance, so she quit dancing professionally. She then thought she would become an actress instead, but found little success. Meanwhile, she spent most of her evenings in the dance and punk clubs of New York, and took up with a boyfriend, Dan Gilroy, who had a band. She joined, first as only a drummer and guitarist, and also helping write songs. After much cajoling, Dan finally agreed to let her sing in one of their gigs, and the audiences simply loved her performances--and she loved the attention. She pulled to become the lead singer of the band, called The Breakfast Club; this caused tension within the group, and Madonna soon left to form her own band, Emmy, with Steve Bray, a drummer and a friend of hers from the University of Michigan. Emmy, which had a more rock/New Wave-inspried Blondie-esque sound, enjoyed some success on the downtown club scene, booking gigs at then-influential bars like Max's Kansas City. At the same time, Madonna was also a fixture in the downtown dance and hip-hop clubs, and she and Bray soon began collaborating on dance songs that blended influences like disco and the early rap of Grandmaster Flash and Fab Five Freddie. Madonna began performing in local clubs as a solo artist (with backing dancers, etc.), to great success at downtown dance clubs. She recorded demo reels with Bray, which she took to a DJ, Mark Kamins, at one of the most influential dance clubs at the time, Danceteria. It worked: the clubgoers loved the song, and soon Kamins was introducing Madonna to the head of Sire Records, Seymour Stein, who signed her right away. The rest, as they say, is history. So what influenced her? The desire to be a 'star' of some kind. She has said that she knew she would end up a star of some sort, but she never thought it would be singing that would get her there. It seems she was looking for a creative outlet, after giving up on dancing, and music--along with people like Gilroy, Bray and Kamins--showed up in the right places at the right time.
Madonna was going to become a dance because that's what she loved and that's what she studied. but then went into to music after her boyfriend had a band (breakfast club) which she joined. she left the band later on after realizing she wanted to be successful and do it by herself.
30 odd years later she is the biggest female artist!! and THE BEST!
