Brian May and Roger Taylor met when Roger auditioned to be the drummer in an earlier band that Brian and a friend (Tim Staffell) had formed called "Smile."

May and Taylor met Freddie Mercury through Tim. Freddie and Tim had went to Ealing College of Art together and became good friends. When Staffell had later quit Smile and joined another band called "Humpy Bong," Freddie took over as lead singer and soon renamed the band "Queen."

John Deacon had actually heard (I believe at a disco in 1971) that Queen was looking for a bass guitarist. He talked to Brian and Roger about it and later auditioned at Imperial.

Thus, the band Queen that we know today had been formed. :)
