Music can inspire you and help you through ruff times.
The slaves in the fields would sing to help them get through the sorrow and during the nighttime, they would have secret church meetings where they would sing very passionately and often get carried away.
Slave music would have taken the slaves away from the suffering and distress for a bit. Music makes a lot of people feel better, so the slaves were no different. Some music may be from ancestors or close family members.Slave music allowed the slaves to express themselves through their culture and the music was a way for them to have a little bit of fun. There were restrictions that came with being a slave, and their music was something that wasn't restricted againest them. Therefore, they played their music, sung and danced to it often, because it was one free thing they had.
Music was something slaves with different languages and cultures could enjoy together.

I was told....a long time ago, Blues music was not true slave music, but was a spinnoff of the "Work Songs" sang as a form of communication between common areas, among the slaves. This form of communication aided in keeping the others informed of work, illnesses, deaths and other things that affected the lives of all. It is said that the main focus of the words was to communicate methods and general info on escapes, or more over how, when, and where the escape was to take place. The slaves created this elaborate series of words through song as not to alarm the owners or divulge their intentions. It was kind of a second language in which they could "put it out there" in plain english, but only they could understand the meaning.
If you need to ask the question, then you just don't get it. I know some people play blues music because they have seen bad things and hard times. Others because they like the spiritual and mental state it brings them to. Others simply because they like the sound. Me, I play the blues for all of the above reasons.
