Operation Ivy became somewhat "known" after their album Energy was released on the indie label Lookout Records and it sold relatively well for an indie punk record at the time. The band become more "known" (I still wouldn't say famous) after the band Green Day hit the big time in 1994. Green Day covered the Op Ivy's song "Knowledge" on their first album, and often mentioned them as an influence in interviews. Green Day's first two albums were also released on Lookout Records. The band gained increasing popularity again after the band Rancid scored a hit the following year. Rancid's lead singer, Tim Armstrong (Lint) was a member of Operation Ivy.
