To become lead guitarist in a band, you need to be the best guitarist of the group.

Not true. In order to be a lead guitarist, you must have at least a basic understanding of Music Theory. You can play any lick you want, but if it does not fit, it will sound horrible.

Actually, you must be the most skilled LEAD guitarist in the group. That means a skill at hitting individual notes cleanly, with feeling, and with speed. You must be able to transition between scales easily, and improvise occasionally. This is different than being the rhythm guitarist which involves keeping steady time, knowing your chord theory, playing all the notes in a chord cleanly, and making complex rhythms and changes within a chord with one hand while playing out a complex rhythm with your right hand.
