John Mayers finger picking is very fluent and precise with elements of lots of styles from country to blues to indie rock to slap n pop to psychedelic. He has spent years honing his skills so be prepared to 'practice, practice, practice' if you intend on getting close to his prodigious talent. That said as with all Guitarists his style can be broken down into its base elements and i will try to break down one of the most used, think 'Stop this train' and 'Heart of life'. Both of these songs have riffs and licks which start on the off beat or the gap between kicks. This leaves a space where the kick drum normally goes and John uses this space to lay a slap on the bass strings with his picking hand thumb. This technique combined with the strings being muted by his fretting hand gives a percussive thump similar to a kick drum. if a note is needed at the same time as the percussive thump then John uses his fretting hand index finger which is flicked out as he thumps his thumb to plays notes fretted on the higher strings. add this to his knowledge of scales, riffs, licks, runs and solos and you will be getting close.
Finger picking is a style, like hybrid, sweep, alternate, economy, etc. The way you do it is the last three strings (E, A, D, the thickest ones) you pick with your thumb, then the G string with your index finger, the B with your middle finger, and the high E with your ring finger.
The advantages of finger style guitar playing would that the player can strike 4 or 5 points versus just one with a pick. Also, finger style guitar playing allows for playing some chords which are not possible with a pick.
Yes. He only uses his first two fingers and his thumb, never a guitar pick
You can strum a guitar in various ways. You can strum with your thumb only, with your index finger (nail side strumming the strings), with your thumb and index (thumb supporting the index finger, simulation of holding a pick) and even with all your fingers. There are many ways of strumming the guitar, maybe some that I haven't mentioned here. It really depends on what the individual guitarist prefers though and what they find easiest
Sure! I recommend plastic though, not metal, as this can damage the strings.
An electic guitar can use any pick, as a acoustic guitar can use. If you want to strum you want a flismy pick, or a small size. And if you want to pick the notes your going to want to have a hard pick, or a large.

a pick or a 'plecktrum' (or pleq)- same thing..say pick or pleq though! you can also use your fingers (especially for acoustic guitar and finger picking elec - Mark Knoplfer never used a pick w/ his elec guitar!)
Golpe is mostly used in Flamenco guitar and it is a finger tap on the golpeador which is called a 'pick guard'. This technique requires the strumming finger and the golpe finger to move in opposite directions at the same time.
