sounds like plastic gear parts up in the roof. The nylon parts get wore easily since they are in the roof and subject to extreme temps. If any of that mechanism fails then your sunroof will stop working even if the motor is still good. The fix will be to remove the headliner to get at the mechanism and then identify the culprit and replace it. The dealer will have the lil gear thing and it will be cheap. Good luck !!! I just finished this: took out headliner-parts-belts, etc.. The little plastic relay was clicking but it did not make sense motor was burnt out. I tested relay with meter and crossed the leads. The roof motor started to hum. I fiddled a minute and off it went. Running like a top. I think it was winter corrosion built up. BOTTOM LINE: fiddle with the relay first, then attempt the motor removal.

Or as a matter of fact, any old, small tube amp from the 50's or early 60's will do it. Crank it. An old silvertone or supro electric guitar will do the trick as well. I use a 61 Supro Belmont, a 64 Silvertone 1413 and a 67 Silvertone 1457 through a 57 Danelectro amp for doing the deep blues. Sounds very close. Hunt down that vintage gear, nothing else today sounds even remotely close. There is also a chance Elmore modded his own gear as he was well versed in radios and electronics.

i worked at a Saturn dealership for a year in the parts dept and the only way to close the sunroof manually is to use the gear the motor drives. i can't remember but some or the sunroofs were direct drive som using the gear may not be an option.

I have the same problem.. I am going to be working on finding out the answer. Just gotta figure out how to get the headliner out. Its all pretty much out except the part that's attached at the sunroof Don't have the sunroof fixed yet, but have the headliner out. On mine there is a rubber strip that goes around the headliner/sunroof opening. You just pull that strip off then very carefully peel back the headliner material. My dad is a mechanic and said it sounds like a gear is stripped. He said that there could be a bigger gear and smaller gear. Haven't quite looked into that part yet. But if anyone else is having these problems and would like to keep up with me and my progress on it then e-mail me at mycutlassblue2@yahoo.com I got the motor out and the motor and the little gear is all built in together so you just have to buy a new motor. Dealerships will probably cost about 330 dollars for a new one. I suggest looking around at a junk yard or finding a place that can rebuild them. I found a place that sells rebuilt ones and the guy told me 50 bucks. I get it this Tuesday Nov 18th 08.... so that's all I can help out with. When I had the motor out I hooked the switch back into it and I could hold the gear in place with my fingers.
