If you hold the French horn to your mouth, the valves will be facing the right side of the room. See the opening at the end? Put your right hand in it and flatten it and put it on one of the walls. Put your left hand on the valves. That is how you hold a French horn

∙ 9y agoThe majority of Marching Bands will use Mellophones. Mellophones are trumpets in the key of F so there's no transposition involved. Where the kick slide is located (should be on the top of the pipe of the third valve), you can take the ring off and put what's called a flyer. It has a clip that will hold your flip folder.
However, not every marching band uses mellophones. If that's the case, check to see if your horn has a little square hole to put a flyer. It would be near the pinky ring. If there isn't one, I personally don't know how you'd hold your music. My recommendation is to get a Flute/piccolo flyer, which attaches to your forearm.

No. A marching french horn, also called a mellophone, has a shape more like a trumpet with a large bell facing forward. A "regular" french horn has the bell facing backwards. You use your left hand to play the french horn and your right hand to play the mellophone. Fingering also changes to that identical to a trumpet, or a B-flat Horn (the E's and D's are fingered differently). Some mellophones are made to be used with a trumpet (cornet) mouthpiece, but there are adapters you can use to use your horn mouthpiece.
