When you buzz into the mouthpiece of a Trumpet, the vibrations travel through the tubing of the trumpet. The sound is amplified by the bell. When you press down a valve on the trumpet, you make the pitch lower.

Sometimes trumpets sound different if the bell has a big dent or has been dropped. When this happens the sound waves that travel through the trumpet can't travel in the smooth path they would if the trumpet was taken care of.

That's difficult to answer the way you asked it. A trumpet sounds different than a violin because it's made from different material, and because it's a wind instrument rather than a string instrument. It doesn't sound different because it's "built to sound different." It sounds different because of the laws of physics; it's a completely different type of instrument.

A Flute produces sound by sympathetic vibration. A trumpet by forced vibration.

To explain:

A flutes vibrations are caused by the resonant cavity in the tube of the flute vibrating in sympathy with the speed of the air across its aperture.

A trumpet is caused by a the lips of the user setting up pressure waves into the tubing of the instrument.

One is passive and the other is active sound.
