In the early days of radio, it helped by bringing people to events in real-time: for example, if you couldn't afford a ticket to the Baseball game, or if you were not allowed (due to segregation) to attend a concert, you could hear it on the radio. Radio was the first mass medium to take you to an event in real-time, in fact. You had to wait for the newspaper or magazine to get published, but with radio, if something was happening, you could hear it. Radio also helped by letting you listen to important news-makers-- even the president; take courses in a variety of subjects (there was distance education as far back as 1922, taught by local professors); and find out the latest news and weather, the sports scores, etc. And as radio became more popular, soon you could hear the most famous entertainers and even great preachers and public speakers.

Then as now, radio also helped by being your friend. Radio is an intimate medium-- it talks directly to the audience, and you can imagine being in the studio with the announcer. To this day, many people enjoy listening to their favorite disc jockey or talk show host or sportscaster; radio continues to provide companionship at all hours of the day and night. Radio helps make life easier by giving you the latest weather, the traffic reports, and the news from all over the world. Radio also helps by being portable, so you can take it with you and listen anywhere-- in your car, at the beach, wherever. Although there are many other media choices today, radio continues to thrive. It remains an important way of getting information; it plays all kinds of music; and it offers you a wide range of programs from sports to news to talk to interviews with celebrities to the latest hit songs.
