The life span of a Trumpet depends on how well it's cared for. A trumpet that is abused constantly will not last very long, 5-10 years at most. A trumpet that is cleaned ocassionally will last longer, probably 20-30 years. If it's really well cared for (i.e. cleaned often, well lubricated, and you don't play it after eating or drinking), it can last for a very long time. I've seen trumpets as old as 50 years still in good playable condition.

That varies greatly depending on how well it is cared for. If it's abused and not cleaned, it can become unusable in a very short amount of time (probably three years before you'd have to have it overhauled). If it's well cared for, cleaned often, and not abused, it could last you for a very long time, upwards of 50-60 years. I've heard trumpets that old that sound beautiful.

It took me three and a half years but it all depends on how often you practice

I'm sure that any professional player will tell you that they are still learning how to play every time they pick up their instrument. The contributor above is very overconfident of their abilities if they think they've learned all there is to know about playing an instrument in three and a half years.
