Actually, the amount of years playing is insignificant. People do compose for instruments that they have never played in their lives!! Knowing about the instrument, its ranges and capabilities certainly helps, but being able to play it isn't. ---- Ive been playing for 6 years, and i still cant write a good song. I think songwriting talent is something that some people are naturally better at. Its a creative thing, whereas playing guitar is more technical. It certainly helps to learn the musical basics, such as chords, scales, structure, etc. which is something that could be learnt in months.

before you play make sure your hands are not to sweaty or oily. the moisture can cause rust. also there are many string cleaners that can prevent it. not playing the guitar for long periods of time can also allow rust to start.

Save up your allowance, suck up like you never did before or wait for a birthday, it takes a long time to get say slash good, but DON'T buy one unless its from a real guitar store. Learn tabliture on youtube otherwise guitar playing is just a waste of time since you wont be able to play anything or write anything. That's from experience.
