Answer

According to WikiPedia (http:/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rechargeable_battery), the nominal cell voltage of a Lead Acid wet-cell battery is 2.1 volts, this implies there are 6 cells in a 12 volt Lead Acid wet-cell battery.

The number of cells in a battery depends on 1) the output voltage desired and 2) the chemistry of the individual cell (which sets its voltage). For example, in a modern 12 volt automobile lead-acid battery, there are six (6) cells. In a lead-acid battery, each cell when fully charged produces 2 volts of potential. Therefore to produce 12 volts, the battery requires six cells. A six volt battery contains three cells, a 24 volt battery has 12 cells.
