Well... He was in a coma for about 13 months and when he was in the hospital, a hospital band came around. He was fascinated with the drummer and decided to play them. He had appendicitis when he was little (everybody thought it was a stumich ache until it got really bad)

Later, due to the impoverished neighborhood in which he grew up, he contracted tuberculosis, causing him to miss school and be sent to a sanatorium, where he remained for about two years. As an adult, he became an alcoholic (as his father had been), but eventually, he got clean and sober and stopped drinking.
