He wasn't- he never attended a music academy of any sort, he's entirely self-taught. He dropped out of grammar school at the age of 17 whilst studying for his 'A' Levels to persue a musical career, and is just naturally gifted as a musician and composer, rather like Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan.
