How much is a brand new recorder?

It depends how good you want your recorder to be. You could easily buy one at the local dollar store (I did), but if you want a good one that will actually play more accurate notes, then you might want to buy one from a music brand like Yamaha for about $12 or more.

A recorder costs from 0 to anything.

Most plastic models are cheaper than wood models but plastic instruments are generally not as nice sounding as wood models. For a new player it is best to have a recorder instructor help you select an instrument. If you go for the cheapest you can find you will regret the experience of learning to play it because it will not play well nor sound nice.

It all depends on what kind of recorder you want to get.

There are at least four different types of recorders:

1. There is a wind instrument named "Recorder" and it's like the ancestor to the Clarinet, Flute, & Oboe. This recorder is usually as low as $8

2. For recording sounds there are very low priced devices that work like tape recorders and are very easy to find. These are usually handheld and are actually exactly tape recorders (most nowadays use the smaller tapes instead of the ones that were popular before CDs became the norm). These recorders can be bought for at least $30, less if you find a used one.

3. For music recording, there are analog and digital dedicated recorders with which you can record multiple tracks and control each track with controls similar to a sound mixer. These also vary in price but you can get these for at least around $60. Some of the most popular ones are made by Tascam or Behringer.

4. Last, but not least, there are the type of recorders used in professional music studios. These modern "recorders" are actually a combination of devices. First you need an analog to digital audio interface into which you plug in the instruments and/or the microphone(s), then you have to connect this into a computer (usually through USB), the computer then should have some sort of recording software that will do the actual recording (some of the most popular are Pro-Tools, Ableton Live, Logic, Digital Performer, Cubase, and my personal favorite Reaper). Since you are now dealing with multiple devices (audio interface/PC/software/additional hardware) the price for this type of recorder can be quite expensive. If you already own a PC I recommend looking into getting the audio interface (the Lexicon Alpha is great and low priced at $60), then get a trial version of one of the software choices I gave you to see which one you like the best (Reaper gives you a 90 day trial period and after that it's only $60 to buy)
