I started out learning the Major chords and learning songs by my favourite bands. Luckily for me when I started out my favourite band was Nirvana so I found learning their songs rather easy haha. The most important thing for me was building finger strength and muscle memory to move from chord to chord without that awkward pause or any dulled notes. To do this I learned all the major chords and learned songs that incorporated them. Of course suggesting specific songs would be irrelevant since everybody's musical tastes vary, it's paramount that you enjoy what you are learning. Also learning major and minor scales and practicing them a lot will build finger strength greatly.
I've never had formal lessons and I've managed to reach a good level of guitar skill over the past 5 years using this method. Of course self teaching may not work for you but it's an option. I wish you the very best of luck, guitar is a fantastic instrument to play once you've got around the learning stages.
As a guitarist I would think that beginners should start with an acoustic guitar. However this is all to taste. It may be easier with an electric if you are that type of person!
No, but it will take some practice. It should be considered a song for intermediate guitarist if you want to play the single notes that are so much a part of the "hook". It can be played beginner style by only strumming the chords. The main chords are D-C-G.

Though the answer varies with each guitar player, many guitarists tend to look down upon the video game series. Though it increases coordination and may increase your ability to alternative pick, the game is seen to be a display of talent that is somewhat pointless or does not meet to the talent of playing actual guitar. Though this should discourage you in no way whatsoever, if you explain to a guitarist your skill on guitar hero, he/she will most likely tell you that it will never compare to playing actual guitar.
