I should think that the teacher would play the piece, or at least the beginning few pages if it is a long piece so that the student could hear the tempo, emotion as well as the obvious notes. Some kind of verbal introduction, perhaps the history of the piece, the composer or other interesting facts about the music could be discussed. Then more discussion after the intro if the student has questions. Hope that helps??
