They were written off as useless individuals who had nothing to offer to the public. They were hardly even seen as real people. Others believed that they had no strengths and would need a constant care taker, which is only true in some cases (Helen Keller is a good example of how the blind and/or deaf can accomplish more than anyone could have ever expected).
