There is no set answer to this question, as low cost Guitars change with time. However, you should investigate the guitar itself to find out what sort of wood it is made from, either laminate or solid wood. (This mostly just applies to the top of the guitar) Laminate is stronger than solid wood, but doesn't resonate as much and produces a poorer sound. Solid wood is weaker but resonates fully, producing a deeper, richer and higher quality sound. If you are a careful person (this doesn't take much in this sense as it is quite hard to step on a guitar) you can do fine with a soild wood guitar, which is essentially a better choice. (A proffessional guitarist would never choose to play a laminate topped guitar) You can get solid wood topped guitars for less than £100 aswell, I once bought one from Argos for about £30, which turned out to be an excellent buy. As for makes of guitar, go for relatively small named companies, such as Hohner or Falcon. Well known guitars such as Fenders or Tanglewoods will be of a low quality at this price, almost certainly with a laminate top. Remember, just because it looks good and shiny, doesn't mean it sounds good.

This question has no sense... because an acoustic guitar is a kind of instrument and Epiphone is a brand. Epiphone builds acoustic guitars, as well as electric guitars and a lot of other instruments.
Yamaha is the best beginner guitar brand because that is what they specialize in. Sure there are other brands like Epiphone and Fender, but Yamaha is known for making student and beginner instruments.
