Well, ABBA is probably one of the two most famous bands ever. It would be hard to argue that The Beatles are not the best-known band in history and they are, by almost all accounts, head-and-shoulders above anyone else in sales. That said, Abba is unique in the scope of its world-wide success and for the fact that they have sold close to 400,000,000 records with only middling success in the U.S. There are many better known and better-selling bands in North America, but they do not boast the global reach of Abba's sales success.
The four principal members of ABBA started working together around 1970, released tehir first single in 1972 and their first album in early 1973. They didn't adopt the acronym "ABBA" until the summer of 1973. (Until then they were known by their first names, Bjorn & Benny, Agnetha and Anni-Frid.) The group took a break from performing together in December, 1982 and never regrouped.
It appears so. In some ways they are more popular now than when they were together from 1972-1982, particularly in the US where they had only modest success during their career together. In 2004, Universal Music gave them an award for 360,000,000 records sold and in 2009 an award for 375,000,000, meaning they were selling about 3,000,000 records a year 25 years after breaking up. In addition the soundtrack for the 2008 film Mamma Mia!, featuring all ABBA music, has sold about 8,000,000 copies, including 3 million in Europe, 1.8 million in the US and 1 million in the UK. (The film itself, produced by ABBA's Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, has earned about $700,000,000.) The ABBA compilation album Gold has been on the British album chart for something like 500 weeks, reaching number one five different times, and is now one of the three best selling albums in UK history.
No, I'd say the most famous band in the world would be the Beatles.
ABBA started to get some attention in 1972 with the Ring Ring album but they really burst on the scene after the Eurovison Song Competition in 1974 when they won for Waterloo.
