Brittany and the Chipettes are a fictitious anthropomorphic group of singing chipmunks that originated as a female counterpoint to Alvin, Simon and Theodore of "Alvin and the Chimpmunks" fame for some of the novelty recordings that were produced as if the Chipmunks were a real musical group. The were created because the creators of the Chipmunks wanted to do some "girl" tunes and obviously Alvin and his brothers are male. Eventually they crossed over to the Cartoons in 1983 and later were promoted to essentially equal billing. Like the Chipmunks they are voiced by normal humans (albeit female humans as opposed to the guys who do Alvin, Simon and Theodore) with their voices altered by speeding up the recording a bit to raise the pitch and give it that "chipmunk" sound. They do not exist outside of the recording studio where those effects are possible so you won't be seeing them on tour any time soon.
