No he didn't it is a rumor. He did do some odd things and may have had other problems but he definitely did not have schizophrenia. He was obviously sane enough to talk normally in interviews and put on concerts which if he had schizophrenia he probably wouldn't be.

Because of his extraordinary creativity and enthusiasm for music as well as his excentricities it is possible he had some form of Bipolar disorder.
