When I was begining to play bass and I always heard jokes about it: "It has to be easy to play, you only play one note at a time", "It only has four strings", "Bass doesn't really matter in metal". They are simply not true.
Most musicians understand the importance of the bass and will never under appreciate a bass, but when facing people / other musicians just remember, bass is always missed more when gone than appreciated when around. Take satisfaction in that.
