Actually, there was no "book" of West Side Story prior to the release of the movie. Playwright Arthur Laurents adapted Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet under commission by Producer Harold Prince for Director/Choreographer Jerome Robins' concept to create a modern version of Shakespeare's play. He commissioned Leonard Bernstein to do the music and a very young Steven Sondheim to write the lyrics. It ran on Broadway for years three years before being made into a movie.
