No, the guitar is not a standard instrument of the western "classical" orchestra today, though it was sometimes used as a continuo (basically, "rhythm section") instrument in the Baroque era. There are some great new recordings of Baroque operas that include guitar in the orchestra.

Broadway pit orchestras, film studio orchestras and other commercial groups may include them. Also, there are "guitar orchestras," which are large ensembles of Guitars. Composer Glenn Branca has actually composed for an orchestra of 100 electric guitars (!).

But, as a rule, the standard "classical" repertoire performed by major orchestras does not call for guitar.

Two situations come to mind when you will find a guitarist performing with the standard orchestra.

First, there are many great guitar concerti (large, multi-movement works in which the guitar is the featured solo instrument with an orchestra). The most famous guitar concerto is probably Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez and the concerti by Villa-Lobos and Ponce. In recent years, composers such as Steven Mackey have also written Electric Guitar concerti.

Second, composers sometimes include the guitar or electric guitar as a special instrument that is not part of the standard instrumentation. Rossini's Opera The Barber of Seville calls for guitar. More recent examples of adding guitar to the standard orchestra include Stockhausen's Gruppen and Louis Andriessen's De Staat.
