It is a modern day Romeo and Juliet. The story of two lovers who come from enemy families (Gangs, in the case of West Side Story). It's the story of their forbidden love.
The conflict in West Side Story is the conflict between "natives" and "immigrants." In this case the natives are the white Jets and the immigrants are the Puerto Rican Sharks, both street gangs in late 1950s New York City. The story, and the conflict, is a retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, with the rival families recast as rival street gangs.
