I think the model was Sarah Vaughan, who is still an active model.The photographer was John Thornton, who is also still working.Incidentally, the concept for the cover design was from Bill Nelson himself and Mike Doudwho worked on several album covers, including Led Zeppelin's classic Physical Graffiti.

In through the out door The brown bag wasn't "on" the cover; as a marketing stunt, In Through The Out Door was released with five different covers, then packaged in the brown bag. Buyers didn't know which cover they had until they removed the wrapper. Kind of a sad way to try to boost sales.Coda

Led Zeppelin was a hugely popular rock band in the 1970's. On their second album's cover they used an old World War One photograph of fighter plane pilots.
