Removal of radio from 1998 forester?

I think I understand the reason for your confusion. You start under the console lid, removing the screws under plastic buttons at the front of the lid and, as I recall, screws at the bottom of the console tray. You then work your way forward, removing each panel until you get to the radio.

The Subaru Forester has a radio that must be removed with an Allan Wrench. The face plate is removed with the Allan Wrench and the mounting screws can then be accessed.;
