I gather the term refers to women acting in male roles. Not aware of any in Opera. in Musical theatre, Mary Martin virtually created the role of Peter Pan- surely a male character,albeit juvenile. more recently a Sandy Denny or Dennis played the role of Pinocchio on Broadway or other live theatre. Both are juvenile parts played by adults. Shirley Temple played some male roles ( lLittle Lord Fauntleroy) some kids translated this as Falter-Joy! how is that for a pun. see how the pants fit.
