John Lennon formed the Plastic Ono Band with Yoko as the Beatles came towards its end. Paul McCartney formed Wings shortly after the split. Much later, George Harrison formed The Traveling Wilbury's with highly influential musicians Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. Ringo Starr formed Ringo Starr's All Starr Band at around the same time. Former Beatle drummer Pete Best formed The Pete Best Band in 1988.

Not always, no. Before joining what became The Beatles, Ringo was the drummer in another band called Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, which was a skiffle group out of Liverpool. At the time, Pete Best was still The Beatles' drummer. Both bands played gigs together, and at times when Best missed shows, Ringo would fill in. He was eventually asked to join the band.

"Ringo Starr" sounded like a cowboy name, which suited young Richard Starkey's love of Western movies. "Ringo" came from his fondness for wearing rings. ("Why do you wear so many rings on your fingers?" "Because I can't fit them all through my nose!") "Starr" came from a promoter wanting to bill Starkey's solo drumming spot as "Starr Time".
