Maggie Thatcher defeated Labour led by Prime Minister, Jim Callaghan in 1979.
Margaret Thatcher fell from power because she is a woman and contrary to belief... Great Britain was not one large kitchen.
On the 4th of May 1979.
Margaret Thatcher's biggest change was in attitude. Baroness Thatcher took the U.K from a 'this will do attitude' to a 'can do force'. I did not agree with all her politics. In fact I was on the Miners picket line at Didcot Power Station and took part in protests. However, she was right to want to change the grip the Unions had on the U.K's economy. The U.K needs another Maggie. Rightly or wrongly she had a passion for the U.K and a firm idea of how to ensure the U.K was a movement for change in the World. Now the U.K is a ship without a rudder - and boats sink when they hit the rocks.
The British Government has to call a General Election every four or, at the maximum, five years. British Prime Ministers do not have term limits as US Presidents have, they can remain in power for as long as they are supported by public opinion and the confidence that their own party has in their leadership. Margaret Thatcher was in power for so long because she had the majority support of the Conservative Party, and also because the opposition Labour Party was weak and in disarray at the time. She was finally forced to resign in November 1990 because of the overwhelming opposition to the Poll Tax (basically, a tax for a person's very existence!) both from the British public at large and from within her own Party.
Margaret Thatcher served as Prime Minister of the UK for eleven years, from May 1979 until November 1990.
Before Margaret Thatcher, the labor leader was James Callaghan. He served as the leader of the Labour Party from 1976 to 1980 and was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1976 to 1979. His tenure was marked by economic challenges and industrial unrest, which ultimately led to the Labour Party's defeat in the 1979 general election and Thatcher's rise to power.
The Australian Labor Party (ALP) is currently in power in Australia (2010).
The Labor party is currently in power in South Australia's state government. The Premier is Mike Rann.
Maggie Power was born in 1971.
Margaret Thatcher lost power in 1990. She resigned as Prime Minister on November 28 after facing challenges within her own Conservative Party and declining popularity. Her departure marked the end of a leadership that had lasted over a decade, beginning in 1979.
Australian Labor Party with Julia Gillard as Prime Minister is the dominant party at present it depends however on the backing of several independents to hold its position as the government. 2011

In Britain there is a political party known as Labour. Currently they are the party in power, forming the government. So Britain has a "Labour Government". The other main part is the Conservative Party. When they are in power there is a "Conservative Government", or because it is a nickname for their party a "Tory Government".
Early in her career, Margaret Thatcher developed her power primarily through her expertise in economics and her strong stance on free-market policies, which gained her respect within the Conservative Party. She also built a reputation for her tenacity and determination, earning her the nickname "The Iron Lady." Additionally, her ability to navigate party politics and form strategic alliances helped her ascend to leadership positions, ultimately leading to her election as the party leader in 1975.
