One that's comfortable, inexpensive, and reliable. My first bass was a Mexican-made fender bass & she served me well, however i have had very good luck with washburn basses as well, they cost about the same and seem to have better electronics.

I will include a link to a related question I have answered which discusses some things to look for when shopping bass Guitars.

Additionally, i would note that it is my opinion that beginning bass players should keep to 4 string basses for their first bass, staying away from 5, 6, or 8 string (or whatever else they have out now) basses until you develop your skill further. I would also recommend avoiding fretless basses. Acoustic basses can be good to practice with, but you will quickly find yourself wishing for an amp as acoustic basses often arent very loud. Furthermore acoustic basses often sound shallow and tinny on an amplifier, so be very leery of going acoustic for that first bass if theres any way you can avoid it.

In my opinion, a Fender Squire "P" Bass...generally less than $200, plays well, sounds good, and if by chance for some reason you lose interest, you haven't spent that much money.
