My mother was a Dead Head and went into labor at a 1983 Halloween night Dead show in San Francisco. She wa dressed a pumpkin.

I was born on midnight at St. Mary's hospital, and she named me Althea after one of her favorite songs.

Here's the story of the song's meaning that she always "told me"...

So, Jerry Garcia is in jail for drug dealing and he is faced with the choice of ratting his friends out for a lesser sentence. He's torn on what to do when his friend Althea comes to visit him.

She tells him to calm down, to take it easy...if he decides to name his friends, when he gets out he'll have nowhere to rest his head.

He has an open ear to her advice but also starts to see her visit as an advancement. He tells her that he was born to be a bachelor and when she doesn't seem to care one way or the other...he then has affections for her.

That's the loose version of how my mom has always told the story to me, and ill continue to believe in that version...

When I read each line of the song, it makes perfect sence to me. It's wild and poetically imaginative, just how I see my mother.
