There are eight notes on diatonic scales only. For examples, Major scale (C D E F G A B C) and Natural minor scale (A B C D E F G A) have 8 notes in each. Other scales: Pentatonic scale has 5 notes and Chromatic scale has all 12 notes.

The 8th note in a music scale is the last note. The last note of any music scale is the first note you started in. eg: C Major: the last note is C.
