- Paraphrase. If you require detailed notes on specific sentences and passages but do need the exact wording, you may paraphrase; to restart the material in your own words.
- Quotation. When you believe that a sentence of a passage in its original wording might make an effective addition to your paper, write the sentence word for word, comma for comma. Put what you wrote between the quotation marks. If you download a text, put it between quotation marks.

There are three strategies that should be employed when taking notes. These strategies are the following: Studying in Chunks When it comes to studying new material, it is very important to take small chunks of time to focus on what needs to be covered. For example, individuals who have to study at least 10-14 hours per week should take that time and divide it up into two to four hours per day. Even then, these hours could be broken down to two hours in the morning, afternoon, or evening time to ensure that one is getting the necessary study time in to progress with his or her academic studies. Another strategy could be to study on certain days, especially if individuals have to work or have other familial obligations. However, if individuals are taking online courses, then he or she will need to check in each day for both attendance purposes and any updates or emails. Using a Specific Format for Note-Taking There is not one specific way to take notes. Therefore, individuals will need to take the time out to figure out which note-taking strategy works best for them. For example, the Cornell Note-Taking Method definitely provides a good framework to help individuals reflect on what they are taking notes and even summary what they have taken notes on at the end of their work. Depending on the age of the learner, it may be used at a later time in the writing process to digest new information. Taking Notes on Schedule It is very important to take notes when a reading assignment has been assigned. This is not the time to work ahead to take notes, but to live in the moment of the reading assignment and take notes at that particular time. For example, individuals could work on their current reading assignment and may need to look ahead one additional week. This strategy is okay because it will increase one’s chances at learning the material and staying on course without being overwhelmed with the content in which they are learning. These are three strategies that can be used to help individuals increase their progress in their lives whether it is personal or academic. By using each of these strategies, individuals are also freeing up their minds to conquer other challenges that may be of interest or find their way in one’s life path.
