bolt on - fender for example , you'll see a metal plate on the back of the neck where it joins to the body and 3 or more bolts
Set neck - gibson for example , you'll see one piece of wood glued to the body
neckthrough - metal and shredder Guitars - all of the guitar looks like one piece of wood - the best for guitar builders.
bolt on - fender guitars primarily , low end chinese guitars .. all depends on the guitar manufacter , it has a metal plate at the back of the neck and 3 or more bolts that attaches to the body. This is one of my favorite contructions , if the neck breaks or whatever you can switch it yourself.
set neck - gibson guitars , PRS to Dean , some guitar manufactuers do this very cheap , its where the neck is glued to the body , after years and years of playing your guitar may snap at the joint so I do not recommend set neck guitars to people especially Gibson. They are extremely over rated. Set neck guitars offer a bit more sustain than bolt on , but if you don't plan to play the guitar for a very long time take the strings off and put it in it's case to extend life.
neckthrough - the highest end construction , this is hard to explain but when you see a guitar with neckthrough you'll know right away , there's no bolts on the neck , it naturally looks like one piece of wood but in reality isn't if you where to strip the finish and all the glues off. This is the best in terms of notes ringing out , it can snap as well over time and once the guitars neck is fixed it never sounds the same many will argue. Neck through guitars are the most expensive usually to make.
there is also set-thru , Dean and LTD do this , a hybrid of neckthrough and set neck
A set neck is a guitar that is fixed in one place a neck thru I'd one that is built all in on price an a bolt on is simply a neck that is bolted on so your answer would be a set neck a neck thru and a bolt on neck
The basic 3 are C shape, D shape and V shape.
C shape is what most guitars have where the neck is a consistent roundness in the back and is a neutral comfort zone for people that play diverse styles of music and also good for holding chords. The D shape is what you would find on most Ibanez guitars where it is round coming off the sides of the fret board and flatens in the back, this style is ideal for metal because you are able to most comfortably position your thumb for fast fretting. The V shape is not as common as the others and as named comes to a point in the back with less curvature.
The next aspect of guitar necks are thickness usually reffered to as thin or fat necks. If you look at a 50s Strat vs a 60s Strat the neck was a fatter C shape than the 60s. Fat necks are more ideal for single note playing and the thin neck is ideal for chords and smaller hands.
There are other types of neck shapes such as an offset C shape where the thickest point is not inline with the center of the neck.
there are 2 different types of neck joints on guitars, bolt on necks, and set necks. acoustics are usually set neck, most metal or rock oriented gitars are bolt ons. hope this helps - Kyse
