The Beach Boys did not record 'Do Wah Diddy Diddy'. The band was called Manfred Mann, and the song is available on several of their Greatest Hits albums ('Ages Of Mann' is probably the best one').
On Rolling Stone magazine's list, they rank #12.
I would say it was just prior to the release of their very first 45 "Surfin" in Dec. of '61. They were intended to be the Pendletones (reference to the Pendleton shirts and Dick Dale) and Russ Regan who sent the records to be pressed thought the name was stupid so he dubbed them the BEACH BOYS- who would become the greatest rock band in history.
