There are many. Rock music became the preferred genre for young people back in the mid-1950s, giving them a music that was theirs-- as opposed to the music their parents liked. Since then, it has continued to reinvent itself, producing new and interesting bands and songwriters, incorporating folk and country and rhythm and blues into its midst. Rock music was the reason for many new dance crazes, and new radio formats (top-40, album rock, classic rock); it even became a force in politics and social change-- while it is true that a majority of rock songs were about wanting to dance or wanting to find love, there were also songs about the Vietnam War, poverty and inequality, the need for racial justice, and other issues. Going to rock concerts and buying one's favorite records (or today downloading them) became cultural events that could be shared with friends.
From Elvis Presley to The Beatles to Bruce Springsteen to Rush to so many others, rock music has provided the soundtrack for each new generation, giving voice to the concerns and emotions of the young; and interestingly, today, baby boomers (those who grew up with the formative years of rock) still find it relevant and still enjoy listening to it even now.
