if i understand your question rightly,
the srings on a Bass Guitar are tuned E, A, D, G, like the four lowest (pitched) strings on a normal 6 stringed guitar
the frets go a semi tone (half tone) up each time :)
the twelth fret is the same note, but an octave higher than the open strings, and if you have a 24 freted bass the 24th fret is two octaves higher than the open string
hope that helps

There's nothing really "by the book" on this , the first basses had four strings cause of the upright ! Then someone had the idea of adding a fift string and a sixt and more and more... the most i've seen yet is twelve ! As for tuning, i use low F#, B, E, A, D, G, C and if i was to go up to 8 strings i would add a low C# ! Yes there is such a string, i beleive there are two-three makers out there !
Well, for one, string bass strings are a lot longer than electric bass strings. I wouldn't recommend putting string bass strings on an electric bass and vice versa.
The standard bass guitar has four strings, but five-string basses are common. The six-string bass, as used by bassists Oteil Burbridge and John Myung (of Dream Theater), is less common. Six string bass is used by Jack Bruce, but four strings is common. There can be any number of strings on a bass, but it wouldn't make sense to make one with 55 strings. There are few 9 stringers out there, which is a shame.Traditionally, it has four.
the double bass has 4 strings G string D string A string and E string.
five, or six strings. The four string bass by far the most common
A Bass guitar with 6 string. It a a 4 string bass with two added strings (a lower B and a higher C) The normal tuning is C G D A E B

it is cause the string bass has 4 strings so it belongs to the string family lol :D

the bass strings have to be thicker than guitar strings because a string needs to be thicker to accomodate more bass. This could make it seem like theyre "hard"
the Standard is 4 string but there are also 5 string, 6 string and etc.
an ordinary bass guitar has 4 strings, the thickest being the E string, the thickness of this string depends on the players prefrence,if youll be downtuning a lot then a heavier string is the best option to help stop strings buzzing too much,it all depends on the style you play and personal prefrence,i use medium gauge strings so the E string is 0.105 inches thick, but depending on the gauge of the strings you buy it will be diffrent If you play a 5 string bass the thickest string will be the B string, again the medium gauge thickenss of these strings is 0.125 inches.as for 7 string basses and above im not sure since ive never had the chance to play them e string or if you have a 5 string bass it will be a b string

The difference is the amount of strings. A six string doesnt have better chords than a twelve stringed. The twelve string sounds much more rich and has a unique sound, along with more chords to play.
