passive which the most famous is Gibson PAF humbuckers like in the les paul Guitars that revolutionized the world of electric guitars back in the day .... there is as many pickup makers as guitar makers these days. Seth Lover is credited with the design of the first humbucker. The first humbuckers where made in the 50s, i forget about single coils.
Bare Knuckle , Dimarzio , Lace , Lundgren , Seymour Duncan ..ect
the pros are
passive pickups require no battery you can play them for decades
they are cheaper to get installed
they are cheaper in general to buy
they have more character and power depending on the type (this is debatable)
easy to find , easy to buy
can easily change magnets in pickups for different sounds
some pickups have 4 wires so therefore can have wiring modifications
the cons
some of them are noisy
if your guitar has a tremolo you need F spaced pickups
most kids are afraid of soldering irons , so harder to install
if the wax in the pickup is messed around with it can ruin a pickup making it very noisy to play , although you can re-pot the pickup.
not all guitar pickups wiring color codes are the same
active is choice 2 , EMG made them famous , Rob Turner is the inventor of active pickups. The difference is inside the pickup there is a preamp and active pickups tend to have this boring plastic look to them. They require a 9 volt battery.
EMG H series was the first active pickup made around 1976 , the 58 came next but was too noisy than the 81 was introduced as was the 85 and so forth.
the pros
since 2003 they are solderless , any kid can switch pickups with no knowledge
they cancel hum
they are easy to spot that they are active by their signature look
most high end metal oriented guitars will come with them
metallica and pink floyd used them (why am i writing this hahah)
cons
to use active pickups you need to totally re-wire the guitar (Expensive)
the sound is very lifeless I find
they are more expensive to buy
they require batteries , 2000 or so hours of life , switch the batteries every 6 months to a year
which do I recommend? passive all the way , buy a guitar processor if you're not happy with the sound of your guitar

The main types of guitar strings for acoustic and electric guitars are steel and nylon. Steel strings are commonly used for both acoustic and electric guitars, producing a bright and crisp sound. Nylon strings are typically used on classical guitars, providing a softer and warmer tone. There are also variations within these categories, such as coated strings for longer durability and different gauges for varying tension and playability.
