∙ 12y agoA few of the most reputable companies that make intermediate-model Boehm-system clarinets are Selmer, King, Yamaha, and Boosey & Hawkes. If you are referring to student models, Bundy, and Evette are common names (of the division of the company, not the company itself).

Are first act clarinets good quality clarinets?
No. I have heard that you can break those clarinets in half easily. Are you looking for a beginning clarinet? If you are to get any clarinet, I would invest a little bit more money and buy a brand like Selmer, Yamaha, or a Buffet B12. Those are good brands for a beginning clarinetist.

It's not clear what you mean by "kind," but I'll provide a few answers that may help. There are several types of clarinets. Commonly used instruments include sopranos in Eb, Bb and A, Eb Alto, Bb Bass, Eb Contra-alto and Bb Contrabass. Clarinets have also been made in other keys, but those are less common. In addition, there are several fingering systems. Most common are the Boehm system clarinets. A modification of that system called the Mazzeo system is also used. The Albert and Oehler system are also used for some types of music. Clarinets have also been made of many materials including wood, plastics (bakelite ABS and others), hard rubber and metal. Finally, there are many different brands of brands of Clarinet, with the leading professional brands being Buffet Crampon, Selmer (Paris), and LeBlanc. There are several manufacturers of student model clarinets, some of which market their instruments under dozens of brand names. The total number of brand names must number in the hundreds.
