Nikola Tesla (10 July 1856 - 7 January 1943) was an inventor and a mechanical and electrical engineer. Tesla was born in the village of Smiljan near the town of Gospić, Austrian Empire, (today's Croatia). He was an ethnic Serb subject of the Austrian Empire and later became an American citizen.[2] Tesla is often described as an important scientist and inventor of the modern age, a man who "shed light over the face of Earth".[3] He is best known for many revolutionary contributions in the field of electricity and magnetism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Tesla's patents and theoretical work formed the basis of modern alternating current electric power (AC) systems, including the polyphase power distribution systems and the AC motor, with which he helped usher in the Second Industrial Revolution.

After his demonstration of wireless communication (radio) in 1894 and after being the victor in the "War of Currents", he was widely respected as one of the greatest electrical engineers who worked in America.[4] Much of his early work pioneered modern electrical engineering and many of his discoveries were of groundbreaking importance. During this period, in the United States, Tesla's fame rivaled that of any other inventor or scientist in history or popular culture,[5] but due to his eccentric personality and his seemingly unbelievable and sometimes bizarre claims about possible scientific and technological developments, Tesla was ultimately ostracized and regarded as a mad scientist.[6][7] Never having put much focus on his finances, Tesla died impoverished at the age of 86.

Tesla demonstrated "the transmission of electrical energy without wires" as early as 1891. When Tesla was 41 years old, he filed the first basic radio patent (No. US645576). The year was 1897.
In 1892 Tesla created his radio. Marconi got a patent using some Tesla's patents but it was revoked and given to Nikola Tesla as the inventor. Anyways, Marconi's radio had a very short range and the Tesla radio was a long range one.
As early as 1892, Nikola Tesla created a basic design for radio. This was before Marconi. As a mystery, his lab caught fire and Marconi was the first to be awarded the patent. Authorities realized that Marconi used Tesla's patent to make his radio and the patent was granted back to Tesla in 1943.

I would be incorrect to say that Tesla invented the radio, although he was a famous inventor and Nobel Laureate in other fields of electricity. British physicist James Clerk Maxwell published a theory of electromagnetic waves, from which radio evolved, in 1873. Tesla first became involved with radio in the 1890's. In 1897, Nikola Tesla demonstrated radio control of two model boats in Madison Square Garden in New York City. In 1900 he began a project called "World Wireless" and began to construct a broadcasting station on Long Island. This project, along with his other projects involving radio broadcasting, failed and Tesla was unable to obtain financing from his main backers, George Westinghouse and J. P. Morgan. Many of Tesla's ideas became reality by the work of others. Those ideas included the detection of ships at sea that was later developed as radar. Many of his inventions, including electrical clocks and turbines, were never developed only because he had no money to finance them.

What year was the Tesla coil invented?

The Tesla Coil was invented in the year 1891 by Nikola Tesla.According to Wikipedia - 1891.While Nikola Tesla developed the principals that led to the Tesla Coil (in 1887), the exact date is unknown when the first one was produced.1891 is most likely because Tesla found out in 1892 (from William Roentgen) that the skin damage he suffered was from X-rays produced by his first Tesla Coil experiments.Tesla'a most famously durable contribution to the world is A/C electricity, still the world wide standard! All this is from Wikipedia.Truth is he did not invent the "Tesla coil". The "Tesla Coil" was actually invented by Elihu Thomson(Annual Report of the Smithsonian Institution, states that Tesla scaled up Thomson's transformer in order to attempt to transmit power without wires through the upper regions of the atmosphere.)Following this, the idea of wireless transmission of power was also did not belong to tesla, it belonged to Mahlon Loomis.Their is a large number of myths and false credit attributed to tesla the vast majority of his devices are not originally his.
