Micky Dolenz sang lead vocals on the majority of the Monkees' songs; Dolenz was considered by producers Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart to have the most commercial-sounding singing voice. Davy Jones considered himself "a song-and-dance man playing the part of a rock'n'roll singer", and was a close second on vocal duties. Nesmith sang on many of his own compositions, but gave vocal duties to Dolenz for some of them. Peter Tork was the most musically-accomplished band member (playing a dozen different instruments), but was considered to have the weakest singing voice, and was usually kept in the background.

In late 1968 after the Monkees' feature length movie Head flopped, Peter Tork left the group. Two additional albums were recorded with the remaining three. In 1970 Michael Nesmith bought out his contract and left the group leaving only Davy Jones and Micky Dolenz. After they recorded one additional album to settle their contract, the Monkees dissolved.
