Sir Francis Drake was not known for great discoveries. Born around the year 1540, he was a skilled seaman, having experience in piracy, navigation and civil engineering. He was the first Englishman to circumnavigate the world, doing so between 1577 and 1580, and is credited with introducing tobacco to England after he visited North America in 1585.
