The jazz version was written for Paul Whitemans band, this was the original. This had strings + saxes(doubling Clarinet), trumpets, troms, kit and banjo. While the orchestral arrangement which came in about the 40s uses a more or less standard orchestra. it's important to note that Gershwin did not arrange either of them and that both orchestrated versions were by the same guy. The music of course is the same in both apart from their orchestration
