Electrical problems are tough ones to figure out sometimes and it may be necessary to consult a professional in the long run unless you are a wiz at using a multimeter and checking circuits for short etc (this would require a detailed diagram of the electric circuits of your charging system etc...not impossible but typically beyond the ability of a shade tree mechanic such as I)

So.....what I would recommend, and what would be the first steps for anyone would be to check certain easy things first:

Is your battery newish and are the battery cables clean and corrosion free? Corrosion build up will prevent a good flow of current to your starter at the battery itself and an old (3 years +) battery may be the simple root of your problem.

Check to make sure that the serpentine belt is tight and that it is driving the alternator which charges your battery......yes, I know, simplistic but you'd be surprised at how many simple answers fix tough questions

Finally, take your vehicle to a major parts store and ask them to check your charging system.....they will do this for free, they have the proper tools to do so and will be a wealth of good information to help you.......and of course they want to sell the part that fixes your problem. The point is to see if your alternator is kicking out the necessary amps to charge your battery when the vehicle is running......it should be in tne neighborhood of 14 amps.

If these simple steps don't find the problem then you may very well have a short in the wiring or a ground that takes your battery down and this could be almost anywhere in your electrical system....lights, charging etc.....I would recommend a professional at this point and just let that trusted person do what they've worked hard to learn.....

Hope this helps a little bit...

Why wont your battery hold a charge?

Could be the life of the battery has expired or the charging system is faulty or the vehicle has a draw on the system killing the battery when not running. Drive the vehicle to your local auto parts store. They will test the battery and the charging system at no cost. Battery is bad or something is draining it. Most places that sell batteries can check it. With it charged, disconnect it and see if it holds a charge. If it does, something in the car is draining it. Dead cell in the battery or something is on drawing power from the battery.
