What does T-Pain sound like without the voice box?

T-Pain uses a software plug-in or potentially a stand-alone piece of outboard gear made by Antares called Auto Tune. It is very often mistakenly called a vocoder, but there is a major difference.

Auto Tune takes the signal from the human voice, detects differences between its pitch and the pitch we perceive to be "on key". When a singer is very off key, or the sensitivity level of the program is set very high, the program reacts by yanking the vocal back into place, creating the drastic step effect that comes out sounding very robotic.

A vocoder uses the signal from the human voice to shape another voice entirely made by a synthesizer. A singer using the vocoder must typically play the notes on a synthesizer's keyboard while singing. While his or her words can be heard coming out of the machine, its the synthesizer's voice that you are hearing. There are, however, other models that do not require the manual playing of keys and detects the singer's notes automatically.
